We believe that it is our responsibility to support and encourage each other to unlock our potential and make positive changes in the world. Our ability to achieve should not be defined by where we were born or what resources we were fortunate enough to have around us. To achieve this change in society, we work with partners all around the globe to improve literacy wherever we see that access and opportunity are limited.
As part of our You Buy, We Give programme, we aim to donate 500,000 books each year to those in need. Shockingly, almost 400,000 children in the UK do not own a single book. Unfortunately, this number is increasing, with one in three children now living without books, compared to one in ten in 2005. Children who have access to books are more likely to be strong readers and perform better in school, while those without books are more likely to live in poverty.
Our commitment to literacy extends beyond the UK. We work with multiple international organisations to reach every corner of the world where books are needed. We believe that every child, no matter where they are born, should have access to books and the opportunity to achieve their dreams through education.
