Sophie Kinsella

Biography

Chick-lit royalty, Sophie Kinsella has sold over 40 million books in over 60 countries and is the author of the massively popular Shopaholic series. Born in 1969, Madeleine Sophie Wickham attended schools in London and Dorset before graduating from New College, Oxford with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. After graduating, she worked as a financial journalist, as well as writing fiction in her spare time. Aged 24 years old, she wrote her first novel, The Tennis Party, which was published when she was 26. An immediate bestseller, it was acclaimed by critics and the public alike, and she went on to write a further 6 novels as Madeleine Wickham, including The Gatecrasher, Cocktails For Three and Sleeping Arrangements. Wanting to try her hand at something a bit different, Wickham submitted a novel to her publishers under the pseudonym Sophie Kinsella, which was enthusiastically received. The Secret Dreamworld Of A Shopaholic was published in 2000, and follows the trials and tribulations of Becky Bloomwood, a financial journalist with no control over her own finances and her tumultuous romance with Luke Brandon. Lighthearted and humorous, witty and relatable, the Shopaholic series was immensely popular and was adapted into a hit film starring Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy. Whether writing as the slightly darker and deeper Madeleine Wickham or with the laugh-out-loud, frivolity of Sophie Kinsella, this is an author who brilliantly captures contemporary romance, and all the sometimes terrifying thrill of being an adult in the modern world.
